Base Layers, Mid Layers & Jackets

The Skinny:

With the right gear, winter running is very possible, even enjoyable. NRC has the layers you need to stay warm through the coldest runs.

The Facts:

Everyone is different but here are a few tips for dressing for outdoor winter runs: • Start with a mid-weight pair of running pants or tights. Heavier if you plan to run in very cold temperatures.
• Invest in a warm base layer top. Get one with a high neck if you plan to run in anything under 20 degrees. Wear it on its own or pair it with a mid layer and/or jacket on colder days.
• Pick out a half-zip or mid-weight pull over. This, in combination with the base layer shirt, should get you through much of your winter running, unless it is extremely cold (15 degrees or below) or precipitating.
• Don’t forget a hat and gloves (mittens and face mask if it’s very cold)
• If you run no matter how cold or wet, you will absolutely want to invest in a weather proof jacket. Paired with your base layer and your mid layer, you will be able to face almost anything Old Man Winter throws at you. Your friends will be impressed and think your eyelashes will look cute when they are covered in frost.
